If you’re planning to sell your home, you’ll want to prepare it so that it sells quickly for the highest possible price. Here are a few simple but effective tips on prepping your home for the market:
1. Deep clean the entire home. Clean the carpets, make sure all your surfaces are wiped down—even get on top of the refrigerator. You’ll also want to wash the windows so that when viewers are looking outside, they have a clear view; this shows that you take care of your home. Similarly, polish your mirrors.
2. Touch up your paint. I highly recommend going around your home and touching up all the little nicks on the trim and walls, and generally take care of any detail work that needs to be done regarding paint.
3. Declutter. You’ll be moving anyway, so box up all the things you’re not using, clear the countertops and tables, organize your closets, and clean out the garage. People are always concerned about how much storage space a potential home has; this helps show how much room there is in your home.
By following these tips during your home preparation phase, you’re sure to sell it faster and for a higher price.
4. Remove large furniture and check your light bulbs. To make your rooms look as big as possible, remove any old furniture. It will also help to make sure all the light bulbs in the house work—during showings, it’s best to have as many lights as possible on so that your home shows in its best light.
5. Eliminate any odors. If you have any pets, do the smell test in each room. Use air fresheners, but nothing too overpowering.
6. Spruce up your exterior. Clean any leaves out of the gutters, rake and mow the grass, and shovel any snow.
7. Do a pre-inspection. I recommend hiring an inspector to come out to your home and identify any potential problems in your home before you list it for sale.
